lonelyroads.net is many things. It is a partly a celebration of the beauty of the gravel roads that wind, twist, turn and connect isolated homesteads and tiny hamlets, seemingly hidden away from the world. These roads, and the landscape through which they traverse, are often, as Alan Paton famously wrote “beautiful beyond the singing of it”. He was completely accurate about the beauty. But his words. subtle as they are, contain a far deeper truth – these roads are really all about singing and songs. For if you have the songs within you, your heart will swell and your neck will tingle when you gaze upon these roads. And you will, at least if you are alone, wish to burst into song. Your song, or songs, whatever the music and the words, will be songs of praise, and of thanks. Your your praise and your thanks may be founded on religion, or may not be. That is relevant only to you. But it is the roads and the mountains that will inspire your words, whether in the form of a sacred hymn, a wild and pagan song, or simply a favourite tune. If you have these songs within you, this website may be for you.
